Error Correcting Codes for Third Generation Wireless Communication

Berreu et. al. in their landmark paper first introduced turbo codes (TC), which could achieve energy efficiencies within 0.7 dB of Shannon’s limit. Now TC is one of the main options for error correcting codes (ECC) in third generation mobile standards as in UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and cdma2000. UMTS and cdma2000 standards use two types of ECC; Convolutional coding and Turbo Coding scheme. This paper investigates the effect of different input data sizes of the encoder, code rates, number of decoding iterations of UMTS, and cdma2000 Turbo Codes on its performance (BER vs. Eb/No). The distance spectrum of these two standard TCs are computed, compared and analyzed. The relation between the distance spectrum and performance of TC is also investigated. The analysis of error correcting coding for third generation standards is necessary as mobile operators in Bangladesh will launch third generation (3G) mobile services in the near future.
